Port: Itea
Included Excursion: Delphi
Duration: 4 hours
On board price: € 46 per person
Mystical Delphi was regarded by the ancients as the centre of the world. It was a sanctuary dedicated to the god Apollo and contained his most famous oracle: the Pythian Priestess who would, when consulted, go into a frenzy inspired by the God and give his pronouncements on the future. Delphi was an international political centre, where Greeks came to commemorate their victories and celebrate their cities, states and culture. Several bitter wars were fought over its ownership and eventually a compromise was reached in which it was supposedly neutral and independent. Dominated by the Temple of Apollo and set high up on the hill side overlooking the largest olive grove of the Mediterranean, the site has a timeless feel. Above the temple is a well preserved theatre and stadium. The museum is magnificent, with beautiful artifacts from every era of the sanctuary’s activity- its treasuries were full to bursting with expensive treasures and offerings.
Port: Agioi Saranta
Excursion: Ancient Butrint, Saranta & the Onhezmi Synagogue
Duration: 4 1/2 hours
On board price: € 39 per person
Ancient Butrint was an important Greco-Roman city port, now an impressive ancient site listed under UNESCO World Heritage, located on the coast of South Albania, south of Saranta port, on a cape half-circled by a large salt lake. Inhabited continuously from the 7th BC until abandoned in the 18th century, its impressive walls are reminiscent of Ancient Mycenae, however most of the noteworthy excavated remains are Early Hellenistic and Roman. Of special interest is the circular baptistery of the 6th century A.D. paved with fine mosaics. The town of Saranta is the main town in South Albania. It is build directly over the Roman town ruins in the area. The Onhezmi Synagogue was built in the 5th Century A.D. inside the Onhezmi fort area. Judging from the size of the two storey structure, the local Jewish community was a large and wealthy one. Onhezmi was located on the sea coast, on the overland trade route between Corfu, Thessaloniki and Constantinople (Istanbul). The Hebrew populations scattered on the Mediterranean shores in the late antiquity period were surely involved in trade. It is known from one late antiquity text, that Onhezmi community had contacts with an Italian Hebrew community near Lecce. The inscription on a tombstone says that the deceased was the daughter of the head of the Onhezmi Hebrew community. The synagogue served both as a religious and as a community service centre.
Port: Corfu
Excursion: Paleokastritsa & Corfu Town
Duration: 4 hours
On board price: € 35 per person
Ever since Homer sang the praises of the beautiful and rich land of the Phaeacians, then thousands of years later, Shakespeare thought it the ideal setting for his "Tempest", Corfu has remained to this day a part of Greece that stands apart. Richly endowed by nature as no other Greek island, it has acquired with the passing of the centuries the refinement and sophistication which are the natural outcome of the union of great civilizations with natural beauty. From the port you will drive northwesterly to reach Paleokastritsa on the West Coast. This is perhaps the most picturesque resort on the island with its wooded hills and sheltered bays. A visit is made to the Monastery of Paleokastritsa which was originally founded in 1225. The present building however dates from the 18th and 19th century and is a fine example of an arcaded cloister. Its small museum houses an interesting collection of Byzantine icons. On the return journey a brief stop is made at the area known as Kanoni. So called due to the old cannons which are still in place that one protected the area from invaders. This vantage point offers magnificent views over the bay to Mouse Island and the tiny convent of Vlachernae. Our tour ends with a stroll through Corfu Town with its Parisian arcades, Italian architecture and English cricket square.
